04 Jan How to Stay Fire Safe During the Holiday Season
The colder winter months naturally mean that we’re spending more time indoors and using additional measures to stay cosy. The drop in temperatures plus seasonal holidays like Christmas mean that many of us are using open fires, fairy lights and candles to add some festive cheer and keep warm too.
All of the above create a magical glow, but it’s important to be extra vigilant about fire safety during the holiday season. A fire can be devastating for your property, so read on for our top tips to keep your premises safe.
Don’t overload sockets
It can be tempting to use extension plugs to cram in those extra strands of lights or entertainment appliances, but be careful not to overload your sockets. There might be four sockets on your extension lead, but that doesn’t mean that your main socket can handle that much power. Always check the maximum current rating on the extension lead and unplug any items when not in use.
Turn off and unplug
Always switch off your Christmas lights at night or when you go out, even if you’re just popping to the shop. You should also never leave burning candles unattended, even if you’re just in a different room in the house. Switch lights off at the mains and unplug for extra safety before you go to sleep – plus you’ll save money on your electricity bills.
Check safety standards
Make sure that all lights conform to the British Safety standard; you should be able to see a British Safety Kitemark or CE Safety Standard mark. You should also check whether lights are suitable for indoor or outdoor use to avoid the risk of fire or electrocution. Some lights are suitable for both indoors and outdoors, but never use indoor lights outside and vice versa.
Test your alarms
Make sure your property has a working smoke alarm and test them every week to make sure the batteries are fully functioning. You might also want to upgrade your fire alarm system during the holiday season to ensure that everyone can be evacuated safely in the event of a fire.
